A Legacy of Strength: The History of Sisal in Tanzania
Sisal, a resilient plant from the Agavaceae family, was introduced to Tanzania in 1893 by German agronomist Dr. Richard Hindorf, who brought Agave sisalana from Mexico. Despite only 62 surviving plants, the industry flourished due to Tanzania’s ideal climate and fertile soils, making it one of the world’s leading sisal producers.
By the 1960s, Tanzania dominated global sisal production, earning the nickname “Green Gold” as over 200,000 tonnes were produced annually, employing more than a million workers. However, shifts in the global market and the rise of synthetic fibers led to a decline. The Sisal Industry Act of 1997 paved the way for privatization, sparking a steady revival.
At Liemba Sisal Estate, we are proud to be part of this rich heritage, combining tradition with modern, sustainable farming practices to ensure high-quality sisal production. As Tanzania continues to reclaim its global standing, we remain committed to innovation, quality, and sustainability in the industry.
