Sisal Fiber Grades Explained: How to Choose Between UG, SSUG, and TOW for Your Industry
If you are in the market for sisal fiber — whether for rope manufacturing, construction, agriculture, or any other industrial use — one of the most important decisions you will make is which grade of fiber to source.
Walk into the world of sisal purchasing without this knowledge, and you risk overpaying for fiber you do not need, or worse, under-specifying and ending up with fiber that cannot handle your production demands.
At Liemba Sisal Estate, we export three core grades of sisal fiber: UG, SSUG, and TOW. In this guide, we will break down exactly what each grade means, what it is best used for, and how to confidently choose the right one for your business.
Why Sisal Fiber Grading Matters
Sisal fiber is not a commodity where every bale is identical. Fiber quality varies significantly based on how the sisal is harvested, processed through decortication, and sorted. The grading system exists to give buyers — and their quality control teams — a standardized way to specify exactly what they need.
Grade determines the fiber’s length, tensile strength, color, moisture content, and the proportion of impurities present. For manufacturers, getting the grade right is the difference between a product that performs reliably and one that creates costly production problems.
UG Grade Sisal Fiber — The Premium Standard
What is UG Sisal Fiber?
UG (Undressed Grade) sisal fiber is the top-tier classification in the Tanzania Sisal Board grading system. It represents long, clean, lustrous fibers produced from carefully selected sisal leaves during the prime of the harvest cycle.
Key Characteristics of UG Grade
- Long fiber strands — typically the longest fibers in the harvest
- Bright, consistent color with minimal discoloration
- Low moisture content and very low impurity levels
- High tensile strength — ideal for products under mechanical stress
- Smooth, uniform texture for consistent machine processing
Who Buys UG Sisal Fiber?
UG grade is the preferred choice for manufacturers who produce products that require the highest tensile performance and clean appearance. Primary applications include high-strength rope and marine cordage, quality twine for agricultural and industrial use, industrial polishing cloths (a major export to China), and composite materials and fiber-reinforced construction products.
If your product is high-end and performance-critical, UG is your grade.
SSUG Grade Sisal Fiber — The Versatile Workhorse
What is SSUG Sisal Fiber?
SSUG (Superior Secondary Undressed Grade) sits just below UG in the grading hierarchy. It is a high-quality, commercially reliable fiber that offers excellent performance at a more competitive price point than UG.
Key Characteristics of SSUG Grade
- Good fiber length — slightly shorter on average than UG
- Strong and durable, suitable for demanding industrial applications
- Slightly broader color variation than UG, but within acceptable commercial standards
- Lower cost per tonne compared to UG — better value for bulk production
Who Buys SSUG Sisal Fiber?
SSUG is the volume choice for industrial buyers who need consistency and strength without the premium cost of UG. It is widely used for rope and twine manufacturing at industrial scale, erosion control and geotextile applications, agricultural twines, baling, and packaging, and fiber mats and carpet backing.
SSUG is one of the most commonly traded grades globally because it strikes the optimal balance between quality and cost efficiency.
TOW Sisal Fiber — The Economical Multi-Purpose Grade
What is TOW Sisal Fiber?
Sisal TOW is the short, tangled fiber recovered during the decortication process — the mechanical separation of fiber from the sisal leaf pulp. While TOW fibers are shorter and less uniform than UG or SSUG, they are far from a waste product. In fact, TOW is a commercially valuable grade with a wide range of industrial applications.
Key Characteristics of TOW Grade
- Short, tangled fiber strands — natural byproduct of decortication
- Higher variability in length and texture than long fiber grades
- Most economical sisal grade — lowest cost per tonne
- Excellent bulk density — ideal for filling and insulation applications
Who Buys Sisal TOW Fiber?
TOW is widely used in construction, particularly in the plastering and gypsum sector across West Africa and the Middle East. Additional applications include fiber cement composites, acoustic and thermal insulation panels, animal bedding and feed supplements, geotextile erosion control mats, and paper pulp manufacturing.
In the first half of 2024, a significant portion of Tanzania’s sisal exports to Nigeria, Morocco, and Ghana consisted of TOW grade fibers used in the construction sector — demonstrating its growing commercial importance.
UG → Premium quality, longest fiber, highest strength → Rope, polishing cloth, composites SSUG → High quality, excellent value, industrial scale → Twine, rope, geotextile, agriculture TOW → Economical, short fiber, bulk applications → Construction, insulation, fiber cement, animal feed

How to Decide Which Grade You Need
Choosing the right sisal grade comes down to four questions:
- What is the end product? High-performance ropes or polishing cloth → UG. Industrial twine and erosion mats → SSUG. Plastering, insulation, fiber cement → TOW.
- What tensile strength does your process require? Higher required strength = higher grade.
- What is your budget per tonne? TOW is the most cost-effective. UG commands a price premium. SSUG is the sweet spot for most bulk buyers.
- What volume are you ordering? For large-volume contracts, SSUG and TOW offer the most consistent supply and competitive pricing.
